Senior History News

It's time to keep time in perspective.

God cannot alter the past, but historians can.
Samuel Butler (1612-1680) British poet and satirist

History is written by the winners.
Alex Haley, Fiction Writer

Between political correctness and the desire that children not face difficulty or distress, we see the past melting fluidly before our eyes.

History gets little respect today, the Rodney Dangerfield of study. History taught in schools is whitewashed and abbreviated; some want to teach American history from the Twentieth Century on. No Civil War Stew, no American Revolution Ragu, and no French and Indian War Soup for you.

We believe that we can, should, and do learn from the successes and mistakes of the past. If we are poor in history, not the tedious dates, places, and battles of rote education, but in the ideas that have molded societies in the past, then we are doomed to start each generation fresh from scratch.
